Electric Thoughts For The Everyday Homeowner

Its Everywhere - Electricity

Within all homes are many different crucial systems. Electric, plumbing, heating, air, central vacuum; these are all important and often un-thought-of systems, designed for our comfort. When they don't work properly, it hurts. Not only is our normal way of life and comfort interrupted, but ultimate home value is affected as well. Like many other things in life though, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to these systems.

The electric systems of our homes are particularly important to maintain. Many other systems are dependent on the electrical system's proper operation. In addition, home and fire safety can depend on it. At the very least, having a basic understanding of the system and its needs is responsible.

The Basics of How it Works

When thought of as a circle, electricity in the home can easily be understood. The circle starts and ends at the breaker panel and consists of a supply and return of sorts. Going out to various electrical fixtures is the black, or hot, wire. Completing the circuit, or circle, the return flow is carried by the neutral, or white wire. The ground is a bare or green insulated copper wire. It only carries voltage if there is a problem, or a short. The electricity then has a path out of the house and into the ground, as opposed to possibly starting fire at the problem point.

Keep in Mind . . .

This said, our electric systems harness a force of nature that is dangerous when not properly maintained. Here are some layman's basics to keep in mind:

- Unplug unnecessary extension cords. - Make sure any receptacles near water sources are GFI rated. - Make sure no receptacles are cracked or broken, or showing charred spots. - Check exterior fixtures for rating and a good exterior seal to the elements. - Ensure that the breaker panel is properly labeled, secured and stable, and that all empty breaker slots are filled with "breaker blanks." - Make sure there are no loose wires anywhere. - Any electrical malfunction or oddity should always be checked out promptly. - Regular kicking of breakers could indicate a problem, or insufficient electrical supply from the breaker, for your specific needs.

Revive Your System

Upgrades are another option in preventive and even reactive electric systems maintenance. Modern technological developments in solar energy provision, surge protection, energy storage, and many other areas have given homeowners much more freedom and electrical safety management ability. Updates are certainly worthy of a closer look.

Whether or not you decide to keep an old system original, electrical safety and proper operation is of universal importance. With some basic knowledge and respect for electricity, the homeowner is equipped with half the battle won.
