BP Biofuels, Texas AgriLife Research to jointly develop cellulosic feedstock for bio-fuels

BP Biofuels and Texas AgriLife Research have signed a three-year agreement to develop cellulosic feedstock for the production of advanced bio-fuels.

The joint development will focus on plant breeding and production agronomics, with the plant breeding efforts to be focused the US Gulf Coast to develop new varieties of pearl-millet napiergrass, kinggrass, energy cane and miscane that are suitable for cellulosic bio-fuel feedstock production.

Texas A&M System chancellor John Sharp said, "This partnership with BP Biofuels is a fine example of how the public sector and private industry can combine resources to create unique solutions for our world."

BP Biofuels technology vice president Tom Campbell added, "Developing new varieties of energy grass is essential to commercializing a cellulosic biofuels industry that will enhance domestic energy security, create jobs for Americans and improve rural economies."

Texas AgriLife Research is part of the Texas A&M University System will bring its diverse high biomass energy crop breeding program to the partnership while BP Biofuels' look to leverage its position a global energy company having the capability to grow commercial-scale biomass crops for liquid fuels.

AgriLife Research director Dr. Craig Nessler said in conclusion, "Renewable energy produced from dedicated energy crops will play a vital role for the 21st century economy."
