They have signed a joint working agreement to develop R+D projects for environmental prevention and recovery at sea and on the coast

This press release is available in Spanish.

AZTI-Tecnalia, the Basque technological centre specialising in marine and food research, has signed a joint working agreement with the China Academy of Environmental Sciences to develop R+D projects for environmental prevention and recovery at sea and on the coast. The agreement is a further example of AZTI-Tecnalia as an international technological centre of reference.

On the occasion of the visit to the AZTI-Tecnalia installations by the President of the China Academy of Environmental Sciences, accompanied by representatives of various research centres and universities dependant on this institution, a joint working agreement was signed by the two bodies. The agreement is one more step in the commitment by the Chinese Government to find solutions to the environmental implications of the rapid industrial development their country is undergoing. In order to reduce the effects that this growth is having, they have drawn up a framework programme for environmental protection and, being at its implementation stage, they have sought the collaboration and experience of international organisations of reference. This agreement can open opportunities for co-operation in the future for other Basque institutions and businesses interested in the environmental economy in China.

AZTI-Tecnalia will provide the China Academy of Environmental Sciences, and the various research centres that the institution has along the coast of the Asian country, with its technology, tools, methods of study and know-how in coastal and marine environment matters, the goal being to achieve sustainable development for the Asian country. AZTI-Tecnalia will collaborate with managers of the Chinese Government in order to take the most appropriate decisions in each case and achieve better protection for its coasts and seas. The collaboration is fundamentally focused on two spheres: research applied to sustainable coastal development and the observation, analysis and prediction of the behaviour of the sea. Training and personnel interchange is also planned, with various annual seminars to be held in China.

Amongst the activities that AZTI-Tecnalia and the Academy of Environmental Sciences of China propose undertaking is the incorporation of real-time monitoring systems for marine processes. The aim of this is to gather data in an ongoing manner in order to be able to assess current behaviour and predict the future behaviour of the sea and the estuaries, in such a way that the impact of human action on the sea and the coast can be managed and evaluated in the most appropriate way. AZTI-Tecnalia already has experience in monitoring the sea thus, thanks to the Kostasystem project, implemented locally at various beaches in the Basque Country and also in the Canary Islands.

This environmental monitoring of the sea and the estuaries will also be undertaken with sampling stations for measuring water quality and with the measurement of the currents, tides and waves. Another planned action is the development of methods for the evaluation of environmental impact, especially with reference to human activities, such as public works along the coast and marine energy infrastructure.

Use of Azti's Marine Biotic Index in China

The marine authorities in China are currently studying the possibility of officially employing a tool created by AZTI-Tecnalia for evaluating the ecological state of the quality of the sea and the estuaries. This is AMBI (the Azti Marine Biotic Index), software that contains data on more than 6,000 species throughout the planet, and which has had great repercussion and use worldwide.

Cleric al-Masri loses bid to avoid extradition to U.S. on terror charges

The European Court of Human Rights gave final approval on Monday for the extradition of one of Britain's most radical Islamist clerics and four others to the United States, where they face terrorism charges.

The decision caps a long legal battle and means Abu Hamza al-Masri could be extradited within weeks. Britain's Home Office, or interior ministry, said it would hand over the suspects "as quickly as possible."

The Egyptian-born al-Masri, 54, filed an appeal, along with the four other suspects, after the court in Strasbourg authorized Britain to transfer him to the United States on charges he supported al-Qaida and aided a fatal kidnapping in Yemen.

Al-Masri, who could face a sentence of more than 100 years in an ultrasecure "Supermax" prison, had argued such treatment would contravene Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits inhumane and degrading treatment.

"Today the Grand Chamber decided to reject the request. This means that the Chamber judgment of April 10, 2012, is now final," the court said in a statement.

The decision also concerned appeals lodged by four other defendants, Babar Ahmad, Syed Tahla Ahsan, Adel Abdul Bary and Khaled Al-Fawwaz, all of whom have been detained in Britain pending extradition to the United States.

A Home Office spokesman said that "we will work to ensure that the individuals are handed over to the U.S. authorities as quickly as possible."

The family of Ahmad called on the government to halt the extradition process, saying British prosecutors were in possession of the material that forms the basis of the U.S. indictment and should pursue the case in Britain.

Al-Masri is one of the most radical Islamists in Britain, a country he has attacked for its support of U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The one-eyed radical with a metal hook for a hand has praised the September 11, 2001, attacks, and was once a preacher at a North London mosque but was later convicted of inciting murder and racial hatred. He is being held in a British jail.

He was indicted in 2004 by a federal grand jury in New York, accused of providing material support to al-Qaida and of involvement in a hostage-taking in Yemen in 1998 in which four hostages -- three Britons and one Australian -- were killed.

He was also accused of providing material support to al-Qaida by trying to set up a training camp for fighters in Oregon and of trying to organize support for the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Following Local Acquisitions, Fab Launches Full-Blown European Site Out Of Berlin

Screen Shot 2012-09-24 at 08.49.01Last week online commerce and design powerhouse Fab was admitting, with some irony, that the design of its user experience had not been great, given that it required users to log-in before viewing items. With that requirement dumped, the stage is set for its next move: a full blown assault on the European market following its acquisition this year of Germany player Casacanda and most recently Llustre in the UK. The new 'Fab Europe' site opens today.

Customs delaying some Japanese imports to China

(AP) ? Japanese exporters are facing delays in shipments to some Chinese cities due to stepped-up customs inspections as tensions between the two countries over disputed islands remain elevated.

The delays in shipments to China have been caused by increased vetting by customs officials in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Tianjin, an official with the Japan External Trade Organization, Yumiko Yoshimura, said Monday. However, the situation was normal in other major cities such as Beijing, Dalian and Qingdao.

Kintetsu World Express, Japan's second-biggest freight-forwarding company, has cautioned its customers about possible delays at Chinese customs, although it hasn't received reports of any specific troubles. Sojitz Corp., a major trading firm specializing in China, said it was closely monitoring the situation but so far noticed no major delays or problems.

Total trade between China and Japan totaled $352 billion last year.

Tensions between China and Japan have spiked since the Japanese government earlier this month bought several disputed islands in the East China Sea from their Japanese owners. The move was aimed at blocking a more provocative plan by Tokyo's nationalistic governor to buy and develop the islands, which are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and untapped natural resources.

Still, Beijing responded to the purchase by promising "serious consequences," and Chinese rioters last week damaged Japanese-owned stores and factories in China.

In 2010, in a previous flare-up over the islands, Japanese imports to China faced increased customs delays. Beijing responded to Japan's arrest of a Chinese fisherman by imposing a de facto ban on exports of rare earths ? special materials needed for advanced electronics equipment.

Japan on Monday dispatched a vice foreign minister to meet with his Chinese counterpart for talks on relations between the countries.

Meanwhile, China said it plans to use unmanned drones to conduct marine surveillance by 2015 as it tries to increase its presence around the uninhabited islands called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Li Mousheng, a spokesman for China's State Oceanic Administration, said the decision to deploy drones followed a successful test Sunday.

He offered no details on the test, but cited state media reports that said China aims to have drones and monitoring bases in place by 2015. The reports didn't say when the drones would be deployed around the islands.

Obama responds to Romney's tough talk on Mideast

(AP) ? President Barack Obama, defending his foreign policy record at a time of anti-American rage in the Muslim world, fired back at suggestions from Republican Mitt Romney that the president has been weak with allies and enemies alike.

In an interview airing the night before Obama meets with other world leaders at the United Nations, the president said, "If Gov. Romney is suggesting that we should start another war, he should say so."

It was Obama's most direct rebuttal yet to persistent skepticism by his White House rival on his handling of an unraveling situation in the Middle East. Romney has charged the U.S. stance has been marred by miscalculations, mixed messages and appeasement.

The foreign policy arguments come as both candidates sharpen their strategy just six weeks ahead of Election Day. Speaking to reporters on a flight to Colorado Sunday night, Romney acknowledged he was slipping behind Obama in several swing states and said he would spend more time with voters in the coming weeks.

"I think the fundraising season is probably a little quieter going forward," he said following a weekend largely devoted to raising money in California.

Facing Republican fears that his campaign is moving in the wrong direction, Romney huddled earlier in the day with his top advisers, preparing for next month's debates and crafting a more aggressive strategy.

"I don't pay a lot of attention to the day-to-day polls. They change a great deal," Romney said. "And I know that in the coming six weeks they're very unlikely to stay where they are today."

Obama Is launching a new campaign offensive Monday with his first television advertisement targeting Romney's comments about Americans who don't pay income taxes. The ad, which was to start running in swing state Ohio, argues that Romney should stop attacking others on taxes and "come clean" on his own.

The ad uses Romney's comments to wealthy donors that 47 percent of Americans don't pay income taxes, believe they are victims and feel entitled to government assistance. It shows Romney saying, "My job is not to worry about those people."

The 30-second spot signals that Obama will keep making the wealthy Romney's taxes a campaign issue even after the Republican released a second year of information about his personal finances on Friday.

Romney and Obama both discussed foreign policy in interviews broadcast Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes."

Romney, who has criticized Obama's response to unrest in Syria and anti-American protests across the Muslim world, broadened his reproach to include Israel. He said Obama's failure to schedule a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the annual U.N. gathering this week "sends a message throughout the Middle East that somehow we distance ourselves from our friends."

The White House has said scheduling precluded a meeting between the two leaders, who won't be in New York at the same time. But Obama pushed back on the notion that he feels pressure from Netanyahu, dismissing as noise the Israeli leader's calls for the U.S. to lay out a "red line" that Iran's nuclear program mustn't cross to avoid American military intervention.

"When it comes to our national security decisions, any pressure that I feel is simply to do what's right for the American people," Obama said. "And I am going to block out any noise that's out there. "

In a wide-ranging interview conducted the day after U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens was killed in an attack on Benghazi, Obama defended his foreign policy successes, noting he'd followed through on a commitment to end the war in Iraq and had nabbed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

He also waxed optimistic that winning a second term would give him a mandate to overcome obstructionism from congressional Republicans whose No. 1 goal, he said, has been to prevent his re-election.

"My expectation is, my hope is that that's no longer their number one priority," Obama said. "I'm hoping that after the smoke clears and the election season's over that that spirit of cooperation comes more to the fore."

Romney, in an interview conducted last week, sought to deflect attention from his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, over their differences in Medicare policy: "I'm the guy running for president, not him."

While reaffirming his commitment to lowering all income tax rates by 20 percent, Romney expressed no unease about his refusal to offer specifics, such as which loopholes and deductions he'd eliminate to pay for the cuts.

"The devil's in the details. The angel is in the policy, which is creating more jobs," Romney said, adding that he doesn't want to see overall government revenue reduced.

Addressing the seemingly unshakable charge of flip-flopping on policy issues, Romney pointed the finger at Obama, noting his changes of heart on gay marriage and military tribunals for terrorism suspects.

"Have I found some things I thought would be effective turned out not to be effective? Absolutely," Romney said. "You don't learn from experience, you don't learn from your mistakes ?why, you know, you ought to be fired."

The series of interviews also offered glimpses into both candidates' personal habits, including their late-night routines. Romney said his nightly prayer is a time to connect both with the divine and with his own thoughts, and said he asks God mainly for wisdom and understanding.

Obama, describing himself as "a night guy," said that after first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters retire around 10 p.m., he hunkers down for reading, writing and occasionally a moment alone on the Truman Balcony, with the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial in view.

"Those are moments of reflection that, you know, help gird you for the next challenge and the next day," Obama said.

The "60 Minutes" interviews came as Romney's campaign strove to turn the page on a week of public stumbles and Republican hand-wringing. On the flight to Colorado, Romney said he's looking forward to next month's debates to help reverse his slide, which he attributed to Obama's aggressive advertising.

"He's trying to fool people into thinking that I think things I don't," Romney said of the president. "And that ends I think during the debates."

Romney blamed his fundraising focus on Obama's decision to bypass traditional spending limits during the 2008 campaign. "I'd far rather be spending my time out in the key swing states campaigning door to door if necessary, but in rallies and various meetings," he said. "But fundraising is part of politics when your opponent decides not to live by the federal spending limits."

After Colorado, Romney was to begin a three-day bus tour in Ohio on Monday followed by a stop in Virginia ? states that Obama won in 2008 but that Republicans claimed four years earlier.

While national polls remain tight, polls in several of the most closely watched states, including Colorado, suggest Obama has opened narrow leads. Obama won Colorado by 9 points four years ago, but the state went to a Republican in the previous three presidential elections.

Obama took a rare weekend break from the campaigning ahead of his U.N. address Tuesday, but dispatched top allies to the Sunday talk shows.

Personal Loan: The Pros and Cons | The Finance Firm

Sometimes people have tight budget and this makes their financial matters are very limited. However, it is very difficult to find means on how to look for people who can lend money to us. Now, there are various lending sector both private and public division is able to provide us with personal loan.

Personal loan features

This type of loan is indiscreet. There are no assets, such as a property, offered as collateral. This is the main variance among personal loans and other kinds of loans.

Higher rates than other. Since most of the personal loan is unsafe. There are no assurances to the clients with regards to the rate of interest for their loan. It may vary depending on the credit scheme that they have applied. This applies to credit cards that are commonly used by people.

Fix terms. The interest rate for this type of loan has its fixed schedule or deadline of payment. If the client is unable to pay the interest on the exact date, the amount lent will increase.

Occasionally, a rotating line of credit is offered. Infrequently, this type of loan can also work as a rotating line of credit, like a credit card. In such a case, the interest rate is fluctuating.

No tax benefits. The interest of this loan is not tax deductible, different from the interest of mortgages or home parity loan.

Advantages

If you do not have any properties such as home or land title, and you are suffering from financial problem then this type of loan can give you the advantage. You can have the money by applying for a loan to any lending corporation that helps their clients for monetary concern. It is advantage for people who have tight budget and needs money at the soonest possible of time.

Disadvantages

However, the disadvantage of this type of loan is unsecured and it is not tax deductible. The interest rate varies as well depending on the amount of being lent. It has fixed termed well wherein the client should pay the interest on or before the schedule of payment. The properties such as home equity have various interest rates as well. Unlike to other types of loan, this can be very disadvantage to people as well.

If you are planning to have this kind of loan, you should always consider the advantages and disadvantages of the loan in order for you to determine if this kind of loan can fix your financial problems. Otherwise, you will end paying more than what you have lent if that you were not able to pay the exact amount based on the interest of your total lent money. You should weigh them both.

Dot Earth Blog: Group Promoting Rat Study of Engineered Corn Forced Coverage Rush

Major science journals have long offered media advance access to newsworthy papers ahead of publication under embargo agreements. This process, while imperfect, allows reporters a few days to do reporting and vet studies with independent scientists who also abide by agreed timetables.

A different approach to a press embargo was taken by the organizations that orchestrated publicity around this week?s much discussed study reporting big health impacts on rats fed genetically engineered corn, led by a French scientist strongly opposed to genetically engineered foods. The study has been of particular interest because of California?s?looming vote over Proposition 37, which?would require labeling of such foods. (There?s been fresh discussion of some merits and apparent weaknesses in the work.)

Ivan Oransky, the executive editor of?Reuters Health, who also blogs on medical research and the press, has an important post at his invaluable Embargo Watch blog revealing how the embargo rules, involving signed agreements, used by those involved with the rat study appear to have had the opposite goal ? making sure reporters ran with the scary news about tumor rates and premature mortality in rats fed chow with G.M.O. ingredients without having time for analysis and crosschecking. (I did not have any such special access when I wrote on the paper.) Here?s an excerpt from Oransky?s post and a link to the rest:?

A?study of the effect of genetically modified corn on rats that you may have read about earlier this week doesn?t seem to have said much about whether GMOs are safe. But it sure said a lot about how the scientists who did the work used a crafty embargo to control their message?.

It turns out there was likely?an embargo break on the research. But that?s not why you?re reading about it here. What drew my attention ? thanks to a few eagle-eyed Embargo Watch readers pointing me to this?post by Thomas Lumley?? is how the co-sponsors of the research handled the embargo. As the AFP noted in their original story,?since updated:

Breaking with a long tradition in scientific journalism, the authors allowed a selected group of reporters to have access to the paper, provided they signed confidentiality agreements that prevented them from consulting other experts about the research before publication.

My?Reuters colleagues described the embargo agreement?in a similar way:

In an unusual move, the research group did not allow reporters to seek outside comment on their paper before its publication in the peer-reviewed journal Food and Chemical Toxicology and presentation at a news conference in London.

So did the BBC:

In a move regarded as unusual by the media, the French research group refused to provide copies of the journal paper to reporters in advance of its publication, unless they signed non-disclosure agreements. The NDAs would have prevented the journalists from approaching third-party researchers for comment.

To their credit, the reporters at the three outlets I cite above went back and refiled their stories with comment from scientists unrelated to the study, and from Monsanto, once the embargo lifted. But the Sustainable Food Trust knew damn well reporters would be under pressure to file something the moment the embargo lifted ? especially since this was an embargo likely to be broken, as it was ? and that their hands would be tied as far as outside comment.

Oransky, who described this as ?an outrageous abuse? of the system, went on to propose calling this kind of embargo agreement a ?stenographer?s embargo? ? in that it turns journalists into typists with no ability to examine what?s reported. Please read the whole post here.

Of course some of the blame lies with the reporters or media outlets willing to sign such an agreement, given how it shackles them. The science writer Carl Zimmer made this point in a comment on Oransky?s blog:

I have no sympathy for stenographers. The more that journalists bend to these demands, the more people can corrupt the system. The scientists should be ashamed of their own behavior in this affair, but we also need to deliver a dose of shame to the reporters who caved to these outrageous demands, so as to discourage it from happening again.

But this incident mainly reveals just how dubious this whole affair has been.

If the rat research ends up replicated, it?ll constitute a substantial breakthrough, and a challenge to the agricultural biotechnology industry. But until then, I have to place it in a big bin of suspect studies ?done by people out to prove something rather than investigate something,? as the evolutionary biologist Michael Eisen said in a late update to my previous post on this work.

Eisin, if you missed it, added: ?This affects every aspect of the work, from study design, to execution, interpretation and publicity?. The result of all of this severely tainted work (and there?s plenty from the pro-GMO side too) is that the really good science in the field gets drowned out, and isn?t taken seriously because people just assume that it, too, must be biased. Total mess.?

A total mess, indeed.

PFT: 'It's not the Big 12,' Jackson says to RGIII

Washington Redskins v St Louis RamsGetty Images

After Rams running back Steven Jackson left Sunday?s win over the Redskins in the second quarter, it widely was believed that he?d been benched for spiking the football in frustration and drawing a 15-yard penalty.

After the game, coach Jeff Fisher said that Jackson has an injured groin, but that he could have re-entered the game.

Regardless of whether Jackson could have returned to the game, he has now missed two days of practice.

?He did not practice today and we?ll have him on the injury report for you on Friday,? Fisher told the media on Thursday.

Fisher added that he doesn?t have a policy that requires a player to practice in order to play.? Jackson said he has played with worse injuries.

?I?m not 100 percent, but day-to-day,? Jackson said. ?The injury is not as significant as we once thought it was and we?re just going to go from there. I still have the three days before the game, I believe. Each and every day buys me time.?

It?d be interesting to know when the Rams specifically thought the injury was significant.? The fact that the Rams gave no in-game injury update on Jackson could pique the league?s interest in that regard, too.

Nine years ago, former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan was fined for reporting during a game that quarterback Jake Plummer had left with a concussion when, in reality, Plummer had a separated shoulder.? Shanahan said at the time that he lied in order to conceal the true nature of the injury from the Chargers, in the event the team?s other quarterback (Steve Beuerlein) had gotten injured, forcing Plummer back into the game.? (And, yes, in 2003 a guy could re-enter a game with a concussion.)

?To share with somebody that Jake has a separated shoulder and could not throw and our quarterback goes down, we have a good chance to lose the football game,? Shanahan said at the time.

In this case, with Shanahan on the other sideline, Fisher likely didn?t want the Redskins to think that Jackson was injured in any way, in the event that he had to re-enter the game.? And despite the friendship between Shanahan and Fisher, Shanahan should be asking 345 Park Avenue whether Fisher will be making the same involuntary contribution to the NFL?s charities that Shanahan once did.

Could Obama Be Leading in North Carolina?

Two new polls give President Obama a slight lead over Mitt Romney in North Carolina, whether the country is better off than it was four years ago depends on how you phrase it, and some?national polls show big discrepancies. Here's our guide to today's polls and why they matter.

RELATED:

Findings: Two polls give Obama a lead in North Carolina. Purple Strategies puts Obama ahead by 48 percent to Romney's 46 percent. High Point University/ Fox 8 showed Obama's ahead 48 percent to Romney's 44 percent. Pollster: , Methodology: For Purple: Automated and online poll of 600 likely voters in North Carolina with a margin of error of +/-4 percentage points. For HPU/Fox 8: Telephone poll with 448 registered voters September 8 through 15 with a margin of error of +/-4.7 percent. Why it matters: North Carolina "was the second-closest state" in 2008 according to Nate Silver, and in this state. In fact, it's the only swing state where Romney's consistently polled ahead of Obama. That said, in : "North Carolina just isn't that important to the electoral math" because other states are more likely to be the tipping point that swings the election one way or the other. Caveat: The Real Clear Politics average still has . Plus, these polls are looking at different samples ? likely and registered voters.

RELATED:

Findings: People are more likely to think the country is better off than it was four years ago than they are to think they're?personally?better off. When asked if they are better off, 34 percent of likely voters say they're worse off, 31 percent say they're better off, and 34 percent say they're the same. However, when asked if the country is better off because Obama won, 48 percent say yes and 41 percent say no. Pollster: conducted by FTI Communications. Methodology: Telephone poll of 1,055 likely voters September 15 through 19 with a margin of error of +/-3 percentage points. Why it matters: At the Washington Post's?Ezra Klein today explains that this is ? Klein writes: "The conventional wisdom: Voters don't do counterfactuals. 'It could have been worse' is a losing message. That's been the Romney campaign's theory of the case, certainly, and many in the media have bought it. But perhaps we're not giving voters enough credit." By essentially asking if Obama did a good enough job, we find that voters say yes. Caveat: It's all a matter of semantics isn't it?

RELATED:

Findings: National Journal finds Obama up by 7 points among likely voters, while two tracking poll paint a different picture. Gallup shows a tie; Rasmussen shows Obama up by one. Pollster: conducted by FTI Communications, , Methodology: For Allstate: See above. For Gallup: Seven-day rolling average of telephone interviews with 3,050 registered voters with a margin of error of +/-2 percentage points. For Rasmussen: Three day rolling average of 500 likely voters per night with a margin of error of +/-3 percentage points. Why it matters: These three surveys reflect the . The tracking polls are the only ones showing a close race, and?The New Republic's?Nate Cohn?frames it as There are a number of reasons why Rasmussen might be showing a close race, Cohn writes. As for Gallup, it's less clear --"A similar situation unfolded in early August and ultimately the other polls moved into line with Gallup, not the other way around... Gallup is a credible strike against the view that Obama's bounce is persisting, but they look more like an outlier than a leading indicator of a tightening race." The New York Times's Nate Silver? ?that Gallup is the "most powerful argument that Mr. Obama?s convention bounce is fading."?On the other hand, Silver explains that last week Obama looked stronger in national polls than state ones, but this week, that's reversed. "That might lend credibility to the hypothesis that the some of the national trackers initially exaggerated the extent of Mr. Obama?s bounce ? but also, that the Gallup poll now exaggerates his decline."?Ronald Brownstein explains that?National Journal's?poll has been in line with "most other national surveys," and he adds that the best news for Republicans is that Obama has not been able to get his support above 50 percent.? Caveat: These polls vary widely in methodology and samples, plus Rasmussen has a Republican lean.

Ezra Miller Talks The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Actor Ezra Miller is laying on a king-sized bed -- puffy white comforter over half his body, shirt unbuttoned, Sigur Ros playing on his iPod dock -- waxing poetic about the fact that he?s conducting all of his interviews in promotion for his latest film, ?The Perks of Being a Wallflower,? from the comfort of his own mattress. ?If we could bring more beds to conflict zones, it could be very effective,? he says.

On one hand, it?s easy to dismiss the 19-year-old Miller as a wannabe ?artiste,? one who looks to inspire as he touts a quasi-philosophical narrative. On the other hand, he?s someone to be completely admired: an enlightened star in the making, talented enough to play both a haunted high schooler who commits a massacre (?We Need to Talk About Kevin?) and an animated gay teenager who has the courage to be himself (?Perks?). Either way, Miller demands your attention, particularly in ?Perks.?

Based on the popular book by Stephen Chbosky (Chbosky also wrote and directed the adaptation), ?The Perks of Being a Wallflower? is a coming-of-age tale about the introverted Charlie (Logan Lerman), who looks to navigate the choppy waters of high school with his friends Sam (Emma Watson, in her first major role post-"Harry Potter") and Patrick (Miller). Since it was released in 1999, the book has been an inspiration to millions of teens who've found solace in the story?s main characters. Now, these relationships have been successfully translated onto the big screen, thanks in part to the chemistry between Miller and his co-stars. ?It was like we had been put together by some Match.com algorithm,? he admits.

As for his character, Patrick, Miller seems completely enamored with him, which makes sense: although the story is told through the eyes of Charlie, it?s Patrick who steals the show, strutting on stage during a production of ?Rocky Horror,? dealing with a private same-sex relationship with the star of the football team and providing feel-good inspiration to everyone around him.

?I totally consider Patrick a role model. I admire him greatly,? Miller admits. ?The wholesome method of survival -- that relief and that joy and that love he's been able to keep for himself, he can then share it with his chosen family, with the friends he loves.?

Listening to Miller talk about Patrick, it?s hard not to have the same admiration for the actor himself, who recently went public about his own sexuality. ?I?m queer,? Miller said in an August 2012 interview with OUT. ?I?ve been trying to figure out relationships, you know? I don?t know if it?s responsible for kids of my age to be so aggressively pursuing monogamous binds, because I don?t think we?re ready for them.?

It?s clear Miller has a lot to say regarding teen struggles. These statements are even more pointed if you take his background and career into consideration: a 19-year-old high-school dropout who?s starred in four feature films (?Perks,? ?We Need to Talk About Kevin,? ?Beware the Gonzo? and ?Afterschool?) that have used high school as their principal setting.

?I guess the condition of the American teenager in these times has been simply interesting to me,? he said, while also admitting that ?Perks? will likely be his last film that takes place in high school: ?With ?Perks,? I got to go to graduation -- I got to put on a graduation cap for that scene -- and I think it might be my graduation from high-school films.?

For someone as free-spirited as Miller, moving on to another chapter in his on-screen life makes sense. But don?t expect this next step to force him to temper his opinion. After being ?dissatisfied? with his high-school experience, he now appears to be scornful of the young Hollywood world which he currently inhabits.

?The kids who find themselves under the wing of this industry -- or maybe clinging to the edge of it -- Steve [Chbosky] talks about how they're almost like cotton fields and how they get run down until there's no crop left.?

So what about Miller? Does he find himself clinging to the edge like the rest of his acting peers?

?No, I feel like I am maybe dancing on the beak of that bird, and I am up for getting eaten and digested and sh*t out onto a car windshield. Because, uh...? Miller laughs. ?This metaphor has gotten super heavy-handed.? He pauses. Fittingly, the Sigur Ros song on his iPod is now increasing in volume and about to reach its crescendo, just as Miller is reaching his. ?I think that the bird might be a bit of a vulture at this point, but it's still human beings telling stories, and I think whatever we have to do and whatever the material reality is of getting these stories told, we should proceed.?

Hands-On With The Fitbit Zip

fitbit4Fitbit just announced two new devices, the $99 One, a replacement for the Ultra pedometer, and the Zip, a $60 entry-level model that adds a bit of mirth to the Fitbit family. The One won't be available until October but I carried Zip around for a week or so already and found it to be quite fun and capable. The Zip is a departure from the original "clothespin" style Ultra in that it can be removed from its case to create a sort of pedometer lozenge. It also runs on a single watch battery that lasts for six months, making it far more interesting to folks who don't want to lug their charger with them.

(AP) ? Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says he has a clean bill of health and that he left a game over the weekend because he and team doctors were concerned a case of heartburn and his sense of feeling disoriented might be signs of a serious medical problem.

Pelini said a series of tests were negative.

"I'm as healthy as can be," he told reporters Monday. "You guys are going to be stuck with me for a while."

The 44-year-old Pelini, wearing khaki cargo shorts and a red polo, was in good spirits and cracked jokes while he addressed reporters for a half-hour. He expressed appreciation for well wishes he received ? and said he was not ordered to cut back on his workload.

"One thing I don't want is anybody to make this out to be like I'm over-stressed," he said. "It was an isolated incident and there were a number of factors that probably contributed to it. I am healthy and there are no issues there whatsoever. Otherwise, to be honest with you, I wouldn't be sitting here today."

Pelini returned to work Sunday to watch film of Nebraska's 42-13 win over Arkansas State and to begin preparing for this week's game against Idaho State. He said he planned to get in a workout later Monday. He said he typically runs four miles a day.

Pelini said he started feeling ill an hour or so before Saturday's game. The heartburn, he said, began in his stomach and worked its way up. He said he became dizzy and disoriented as the first half progressed.

"To be honest with you," he said, "it alarmed me a little bit."

He stopped short of saying he feared he was having a heart attack.

"I've been around the profession long enough and really just in life... I've heard, I think, that was a symptom... It started with an upset stomach. Then I felt like heartburn and burning," he said. "That's something they've associated with ... that's one of the symptoms that made the doctors kind of take caution."

Pelini said his father, Anthony, had heart disease. The elder Pelini died in 2008 after an extended illness.

Bo Pelini said twice that he did not have chest pains on Saturday.

"It's hard to explain what I felt," he said. "I knew this: I didn't feel good."

A team doctor checked Pelini's pulse on the sidelines. At halftime, the medical staff told him he needed to get to a hospital, and he left the stadium in an ambulance.

"They didn't like the way a couple of the tests (in the locker room) showed up, and at that point they decided they had to take the cautious approach, which was the right approach, which was to make sure there was nothing going on," he said.

Defensive coordinator John Papuchis and offensive coordinator Tim Beck split the head-coaching duties the second half. Pelini said he was released from the hospital late Saturday afternoon and spent the evening at home relaxing.

Pelini is the fourth Big Ten coach to have a health scare in recent seasons.

Ohio State's Urban Meyer left Florida after the 2010 season because of stress. He complained of chest pains, difficulty sleeping and weight loss.

Michigan State's Mark Dantonio was hospitalized in 2010 because of a mild heart attack. He had surgery to put a stent in a blocked blood vessel leading to the heart. Minnesota's Jerry Kill had seizures last season.
