Online Reputation and Positive Prejudice in Social Media | Social ...

Social media has a great capacity to influence the personal prestige. However, it is still far from achieving a deeper understanding of personality, attitudes and individual skills, which are the main factors to determine surface prejudice, actually.

Superficial prejudicesSomeone's reputation may depend on, for example, a feeling caused by a simple comment on Twitter and its corresponding effect, without further disquisition. This lack of reflection, resulting in a negative prejudice in most of cases, has also an effect on positive prejudice, surprisingly. We prejudge positively when we create an opinion about someone's professionalism due to trivial aspects such as a profile's description, the amount of contacts and their quality or the interest of the posted news. We trust in unconscious feelings to determine that someone is an expert on something, instead of considering with sense/assessing sensibly.

That is why personality has never been easier to show with the aid of social media networks. Nowadays, there is no need to publish something in journals talking about unknown topics, or discuss wisely in opinion forums, or show original impressions in a blog, just need to be fast to link them in order to create, with a positive prejudge in mind, a good reputation on line, even without a real capacity of erudition.

Certainly, keeping a good online reputation is an essential item, and it involves media knowledge as well as honesty. Appearing to have some skills that in fact, we do not have is quite easy, because of our superficiality to judge. But (the truth is that) sooner or later, time to put them into practice will come and exceeding expectations will be always better than not achieving.

Kurdish fighters gather in disputed area in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? The commander of Kurdish forces dispatched fighters to a disputed northern area of Iraq Wednesday, as tensions mounted between Iraq's central government and the Kurdish-ruled autonomous region.

Neighboring Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned that the Iraqi government was steering the country to civil war. Such a conflict could spill across the border.

Peshmerga commander Mahmoud Sankawi said forces were shifted to the Khanaqin area overnight from the nearby town of Kifri. He did not specify how many men or armored vehicles were involved. Sankawi said he did not coordinate with Iraqi forces, nor inform them of the troop movements.

"It is well known to them," Sankawi said.

The Kurdish Peshmerga forces control security in the Kurdish autonomous region, but are also present in disputed areas.

The movement of Kurdish forces came a day after the government sent tanks and armored personnel carriers to the Kirkuk area, some 60 miles away. That area is claimed by both sides.

Tensions have been sharply increasing since Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki formed a new military command last month to oversee Baghdad-run security forces bordering the Kurdish region, including disputed areas claimed by Iraqi Arabs, Turkomen and Kurds ? especially the areas surrounding Mosul and Kirkuk.

U.S. forces once supervised the area, helping Kurdish and Arab security forces form joint patrols.

Any deterioration into actual fighting in the broad swath of northern Iraq could spread into Turkey, which has a large Kurdish minority. On Wednesday, the Turkish prime minister said his government feared the Iraqi central government was dragging the country toward internal conflict.

"Now, our fears are slowly coming true," Erdogan said. "The regime is trying to take things toward a civil war."

The Iraqi commander of the newly formed Dijla Joint Military Command, now overseeing government forces in disputed areas, said they would not back down from a confrontation.

"We are closely watching them. We are not afraid of them," said Lt. Gen. Abdul-Amir al-Zaidi. "The Iraqi army must be responsible for Iraqi security and its sovereignty."

Iraqi government officials were unavailable for comment.

On Friday, a shootout between Iraqi police and Kurdish guards in a disputed northern city left a civilian dead and four policemen wounded.

It was the first clash with casualties between the two sides for years, despite disputes over land, natural resources and power sharing since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled longtime dictator Saddam Hussein.

Cell phone video reveals teen's elaborate plan to blow up Tampa school

Cell phone video just released by prosecutors offers a chilling view into the mind of a Florida teenager who in 2011 was charged with plotting to kill teachers and students with bombs at his Tampa high school.

Jared Cano, then 17, wrote a manifesto that detailed his plans for an attack in August 2011 on the first day of classes at Freedom High School in Tampa, Fla., from which he had been expelled in March 2010. Police arrived at the home where Cano lives with his mother to arrest him. In his home police recovered bomb-making material, including fuses, timers, shrapnel, accelerant and plastic tubing.

In the recently released video, Cano outlines to the minute his plans to blow up Freedom High School.

"For those of you retards who don't know who I am, I'm the Freedom High School shooter in Tampa, Florida. Well I will be in a couple months," Cano says on the video. "My plan is to set a bomb here at point A, here at point B, point C and point D. Then I got to get to the side entrance of the school by 7:24. The bombs blow at 7:26."

Cano never got the chance to go through with his deadly plan, because a friend tipped off police and he was arrested. In addition to the bomb-making materials at his home, investigators found a manifesto and illustrations detailing his plans.

"We were probably able to thwart a catastrophic event," Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said.

The newly released cell phone video shows Cano not only intended to kill as many students as possible, but that he specifically targets two teachers who Cano says did him wrong -- as well as sparing one teacher's life.

"[I'll] Come through the door then shoot everybody at the front desk," he said on the video. "Mr. Costanzo's office is right here, I've got to kill him. Mrs. Carmody is here I've got to kill her. Mr. Pears is here, I've got to make sure he doesn't die, because I like him.

At times during his boastful rant Cano smokes marijuana. In the clip he says that he would retrieve a stash of weapons hidden near the school and come back in.

"I'm going to come in and advance on the courtyard where there'll probably be at least sixty people," he said

While he lays out the details of his master plan, Cano also offers a solution to stopping him and others like him.

"If you don't like it," he said, "just find a way to find people like me and just line us up and shoot us."

Prior to his arrest, Cano had an "extensive criminal record," according to police, who confirmed that he had broken into a house and stolen a firearm. The victim of that theft, a convicted felon, did not press charges. Cano had also been charged with the possession of marijuana, carrying a concealed weapon and a taser.

Cano has been charged with threatening to throw, project, place or discharge a destructive device. He also faces charges for possession of bomb-making materials, cultivation of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Having been jailed since August 2011, Cano will be sentenced on December 5, after he pled no contest to two charges. His defense attorney has said he plans to call the teen's family as character references, WFTS reported. He has hopes of getting time served.

Yeast protein breaks up amyloid fibrils and disease protein clumps differently

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Several fatal brain disorders, including Parkinson's disease, are connected by the misfolding of specific proteins into disordered clumps and stable, insoluble fibrils called amyloid. Amyloid fibrils are hard to break up due to their stable, ordered structure. For example, ?-synuclein forms amyloid fibrils that accumulate in Lewy Bodies in Parkinson's disease. By contrast, protein clumps that accumulate in response to environmental stress, such as heat shock, possess a less stable, disordered architecture.

Hsp104, an enzyme from yeast, breaks up both amyloid fibrils and disordered clumps. In the most recent issue of Cell, James Shorter, PhD, assistant professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics, and colleagues from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, show that Hsp104 switches mechanism to break up amyloid versus disordered clumps. For stable amyloid-type structures, Hsp104 needs all six of its subunits, which together make a hexamer, to pull the clumps apart. By contrast, for the more amorphous, non-amyloid clumps, Hsp104 required only one of its six subunits.

Unexpectedly, the bacterial version of the Hsp104 enzyme, called ClpB, behaves differently compared to Hsp104. Bacterial ClpB uses all six subunits to break up amorphous clumps and fails to break up amyloid fibrils. Bacteria just ignore these more stable structures, whereas yeast use Hsp104 to exploit amyloid fibrils for beneficial purposes.

"One surprise is that biochemists thought that Hsp104 and ClpB hexamers worked in the same way," says first author and graduate student in the Shorter lab Morgan DeSantis. "This is not the case."

Hsp104 breaks up the protein clumps by "pulling" individual polypeptide chains through a channel that the hexamer forms at its center, recruiting more subunits to the job, as needed. Individual polypeptides emerge on the other side where they can be refolded into active structures. Remarkably, Hsp104 broke up various amyloid fibrils formed by proteins connected to Alzheimer's disease (tau and Ab42), Parkinson's disease (?-synuclein), Huntington's disease (polyglutamine), and even type II diabetes (amylin).

The bad news is that animals do not harbor their own version of Hsp104 and they do not appear to have the protein machinery to break up amyloid clumps as rapidly. But Shorter views this as a possible therapeutic opportunity: "We want to introduce Hsp104 transiently as a therapeutic clump buster and optimize Hsp104 for each type of disease protein." He is heartened by preclinical evidence that Hsp104 rescues neurodegeneration caused by ?-synuclein misfolding in a rat model of Parkinson's disease. His lab is now scanning yeast cells to look for the most useful forms of Hsp104.

PFT: Torn ACL sidelines Meriweather for season

Ed ReedAP

Ravens safety Ed Reed will end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame some day, but the NFL says he needs to work on his tackling.

Specifically, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson said on Mike and Mike in the Morning that Reed, who was suspended for one game for repeated blows to the head and neck area of opposing players, has to change the way he delivers hits, learning to aim lower and not lead with his head.

?We want him to hit below the head and neck area,? Anderson said. ?We?d like to see him use his shoulder. We?d like to see him wrap up in a more traditional technique. But we absolutely do not want to see head to head, shoulder, forearm to head or neck area, no real attempt to wrap, and almost going missile-like up high. We cannot have those in the game any longer.?

Anderson said that Reed, who was penalized on Sunday for a helmet-to-helmet hit, fined once earlier this year for a helmet-to-helmet hit and also fined in 2010 for a helmet-to-helmet hit, has run out of chances.

?Ed Reed, unfortunately, is a repeat offender. We put the burden on the defender to alter his target in those situations when a player is defenseless,? Anderson said.

The NFL wants players to understand that the league office is serious about cracking down on hits to the head of defenseless players, and if fines don?t get the message through, suspensions will be the next step.

?Hits to the head and neck area potentially are life altering as well as career altering,? Anderson said. ?Hits to the head and neck area are our biggest concern and we are absolutely intent on getting those out of the game. We can?t defer any longer to fines as the primary deterrent. They are not effective.?

Reed has an appeal hearing today, with former coach Ted Cottrell handling the appeal. Anderson obviously doesn?t think Reed has any grounds to get his suspension lifted.

Rock Climbing in the Patapsco State Park and Baltimore MD: Just in ...

DISCLAIMER

There are no warranties, whether expressed or implied, that this guide is accurate or that the information contained in it is reliable. Your use of this guide indicates your assumption of the risk that it may contain errors and is an acknowledgment of your own sole responsibility for your climbing safety in what is potentially a life threatening sport.

More About the Guide

There are just over 100 rock outcrops listed in this guide, although 40% really aren?t worth talking about. I chose to include the 40% so you can decide for yourself if they are worth climbing. Perhaps the vegetation just needs to be cleaned off to uncover something grand. There are lots of bouldering spots listed as well.

Click on the balloons in Google Earth to see information and pictures of each crag. All crags will have the height, the direction the rock faces, a clean rating, and the approximate number of routes. The clean rating is on a scale 1 to 5 where Ilchester is a 5 and Friction wall is a 2. Please keep in mind this is a small scale and very subjective. The last rating, approximate number of routes, is based on either having climbed at the crag or a visual inspection of the crag. This rating should give you an idea of how much a crag has to offer. Please note that the green park boundary lines seen here in Google Earth were hand-drawn and are not exact. I often get asked if I have climbed on all of the crags listed here and the answer is no, as some are just plain rotten rock or covered in vines.

Naming of the Crags

The majority of the crags were named by their location to the nearest road. I did take some liberty and gave unique names to some crags even though I may not have been the first person to discover the crag. If you feel you have the right to name a place, I?ll be happy to consider changing the name.

Bolting

Many of the crags listed with in this blog have established routes that are not documented. This being the case, please ask before bolting to make sure a route doesn't already exists. There are several Crags in the area that are desired by many to stay bolt free in order to protect the established routes. The list is, Ilchester, Woodstock, Cascade Falls, Bloede Dam Crag, Alberton, Kelbel?s Karg, Marriottsville Gold-Silver-Bronze, River Rd Half Dome, and The Nest.

Google Earth Down load

The link below has the rock locations for use in Google Earth, however this file dose not include the pictures and information found within this site.
In Google Earth I recommend turning on the Park Boundaries by selecting ?Parks/Recreation Areas?, a green pine tree, found in the ?More? folder.

Patapsco use to have a "Complete Trail Map" that had everything! I don't see it on there web sight you may want to ask for it at the Park.

I grew up on a small farm on the West side of Baltimore and started climbing in the spring of 1988 through CCBC. I began lead climbing the fall of 1988 on nuts and hexes as camming units were not well known about. I?m proud to say that I lead my first two 5.10?s, Castor and Pollux at Seneca, prior to obtaining my first camming unit. I started guiding for Mike Carroll?s CCBC climbing class trips to Seneca in 1989 and it was an honor to guide for him for 17 years. In 1991, I took 2 courses with NC Outward Bound, the Wilderness First Responders and a 10-day Rope Rescue course. After completing these courses, I taught troubled youth to climb at Seneca for 4 summers. The last summer I taught the class, I lived at Seneca and my work-week was only 3 days long! With all this extra time to climb, I began leading 5.11 Seneca trad routes. I have enjoyed the challenge of climbing several routes approx. 1000? tall, two of which I roped soloed - Moby Grape on Cannon NH, and Left side cracks on Pingora in the Cirque of the towers WY. I have established a route at Seneca ?Before the Fall? 5.10b PG with Dan Caston and Maryland?s first grade IV route ?Spectacular Spectacle? A3+ 5.8 IV at Maryland Heights with Dominic Albanese.

Just in time for Thanksgiving 16 more rocks

Just posted 16 more rocks all but one are in Tri-adelphia on the west end of the lake south of rt 70.? About 3 miles south is another 18? boulder ?Sharp Stone? in Rahcel-Carson Conservation-Park.

Note that some rocks on the extreme west end of the lake are just outside the border of Patuxant-River?State-Park, it seem here the fire road is the border between the park and reservoir properties.? There is a parking lot right off 97, I have parked here a few times even though there is a no parking sign on the trail head message board.? I assume its means to park on the opposite side or at least not in front of the sign.

The nice overhanging trio boulders Larry, Moe, and Curly are located on the West side of the lake and provide an access challenge as the woods are filled with sticker bushes and currently the water level is high (fall 2012) .? When the water level is down walking around the edge of the lake won?t be so bad however it?s going to be 1.6 mile approach from Tri-adelphia Mill rd.? The Fire road is another access point however that?s not keeping a low profile and is posted with signs.

The rocks on the East side are less of an issue since this is a permitted picnicking area.
