First park golf course to open in Akron

AKRON, N.Y. (WIVB) - America's first park golf course is about to tee off in Akron Sunday.

The first officially sanctioned park golf course, called Destroyer Park Golf Course will be opening its doors this afternoon.

Its grand opening starts at 1 p.m. with a ribbon cutting. Traveling all the way from Japan for the big day are representatives from the Nippon park Golf Course Association.

Park Golf is a form of golf invented in Makubetsu, Hokkaido, Japan, in 1983. It's a smaller version of the typical game, that's played in a small park.

The course opening in Akron is named after professional wrestling Hall of Famer wrestler Dick Beyer.

The course is opening with two 9-hole courses; more courses are planned to be added in the future.

A full 18 hole course costs $8 at the Park Golf Course.
