Just like it said it would, ASUS has formally unveiled its versatile, form-changing Padfone at Mobile World Congress. There are two stories here, and they're both quite compelling, frankly. On the one hand, you've got yet another high-end device, with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display, Snapdragon's new dual-core S4 chip, an Adreno 225 GPU, Ice Cream Sandwich and an 8-megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and f/2.2 autofocusing lens. (The front camera records at VGA resolution.) Other specs include 16 to 64GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD), Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, GPS, A-GPS, a gyroscope, 1,520mAh battery and a compass. Connectivity options include WCDMA (900, 2100 MHz), EDGE / GPRS / GSM (850, 1800 and 1900 MHz) and HSPA+, with theoretical download speeds topping out at 42Mbps. Barring LTE, we wouldn't expect much less from a flagship launched at the world's premier wireless show.

But those are just specs. If you focus solely on its chip and 9.2mm-thick frame you'd be missing its most distinguishing attribute: it's ability to parade around in tablet's clothing (albeit, with the help of some optional, still-unpriced accessories.) Taking a cue from Motorola's Lapdock-friendly handsets, the Padfone can slide into an optional station that effectively allows you to use it as if it were a 10.1-inch tablet. Like the optional docks sold alongside ASUS' Transformer tablets, the station not only improves the ergonomics, but also extends the battery life -- in this case, by nine-fold. Speaking of keyboard docks, ASUS will be selling one for this product, too, so that you can tuck that 10-inch phone-tablet into something with a full physical keyboard. Finally, there's that guy you see up there, which looks like a stylus (and is!), but also doubles as a headset for receiving calls. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the future.

And when can you make it yours? ASUS confirmed that the Padfone will ship in April. Unfortunately, the company stopped short of revealing any pricing, so you'll have to stay tuned for some country-specific details. For now, though, we're planning on getting hands-on with the device as soon as we can, giving you a much closer look than we were able to when we spied a prototype back at CES.

There is little doubt that an All-Star game MVP is in the cards for Durant?s career, so why not this year?

Blake Griffin (+1000) ? Griffin is known for the spectacular and the All-Star game was his coming out party last year with the Slam Dunk competition. He is on a West team that has point guards (including his teammate Chris Paul) that will be more than willing to throw up lob after lob for him to throw down and do phenomenal things. He is considered somewhat as a longshot, but he could surprise some people this year.

LONDON (Reuters) - Twitter and Russian search engine Yandex have agreed a partnership that will allow Yandex to show new tweets in its search results almost instantly, as Twitter becomes an increasingly important source of real-time information.
Twitter will give Yandex access to its so-called firehose of all public tweets, the two companies said on Tuesday, in an agreement similar to the one the social short-messaging site has with Microsoft's search engine, Bing.
"We wanted to make sure that Twitter content can be where Twitter users are already going," Twitter's director of business development, April Underwood, told Reuters by phone. "Discovery through search is so important."
Anton Pavlov, Yandex's blog search manager, said in a statement: "People share news, exchange opinions and discuss all sorts of matters in real-time all the time. This kind of information will help us enhance our search results."
Yandex has about 60 percent market share in Russia, ahead of Google with about a quarter of the market, although global leader Google has recently begun to erode its lead.
Google no longer partners with Twitter, favoring its own fledgling Google+ social network for social search results.
Asked about a possible renewal of a partnership with Google, Twitter's Underwood said: "Anything's possible, but there's not really an update to provide there at this time."
Twitter has more than 100 million active users and 400 million visitors per month. Its valuation tops $8 billion, even though it has not yet established a money-making model.
Google+, which is more akin to Facebook than Twitter, has 90 million users.
Twitter and Yandex declined to give financial details of their agreement. Microsoft has been reported to have paid $30 million for its deal with Twitter.
Yandex reaches about 2.8 percent of global Internet users, according to Web metrics firm Alexa, while Bing reaches about 3.4 percent.

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala?s fiction is always a treat, and although I am not fond of short stories, I make an exception for Jhabvala?s.? When I heard she had a new collection of short stories, A Lovesong for India:? Tales from East and West,? I immediately found a copy.? I have spent a week savoring these exquisite stories, many as richly developed as her novels and as perfectly crafted as the work of Henry James.

Jhabvala, who has written 20 books, won the Booker Prize for her novel Heat and Dust and two Academy Awards for best adapted screenplay for Merchant-Ivory films, A Room with a View and Howards End. ? Born in Germany of Polish parents, she and her family fled the Nazis in 1939 to England, where she learned English, earned a master?s in English, and married an Indian architect. After they raised their family in India, she divided her time between New York, London, and India.? She is a U.S. citizen.

Much of her fiction is set in India, but several of these stories are set in the U.S. The collection is divided into three parts, ?India,? ?Mostly Arts and Entertainment,? and ?The Last Decades.?

In ?Innocence,? my favorite story, there is a kind of double narrative: ? the narrator?s memories run parallel to a novel written by her Indian friend Dinesh, in which he calls himself ?D? and her ?Elisabeth.?? In India, while she studied? with a ?woman saint,? she lodged in the small house? of Mr. and Mrs. Mathotra, ?a middle-aged childless couple who looked more like brother and sister than husband and wife.?? Her fellow lodger, Dinesh, who worked at All India Radio,? despised her spiritual quest, and informed her that her ideas of India were those of 19th-century German professors. ? But when she wants to have a more down-to-earth conversation, he only reluctantly fills her in on the background of their landlords, who sometimes talk mysteriously about their ?problems.?? It seems they embarked on a misguided venture regarding gold speculations, for which Sahib went to jail.? But ?Elisabeth? and ?D? are fond of their landlords, and when they need money, they suggest that the couple take in a third lodger, Kay, a rich, beautiful Indian wastrel who whiles away her time seductively combing her hair. This third lodger is the catalyst of marital jealousy? and violence, and the strong feelings of the married couple come as a surprise.

Many of the stories are about older people?s entanglements and obsessions with beautiful young people who are in some ways lost souls.? In ?Talent,? a gifted singer, Ellie, takes advantage of her agent, Magda, claiming she has no place to live and moving in.? But Magda?s composer cousin, Robert, is the real mark: Ellie is? interested in starring in Robert?s next musical.? This manipulative young woman worms her way into Ellie?s family with a series of lies, and hurts Magda.? But in the end only the genius of Ellie and Robert matters.

In ?Pagans,? the widowed Brigitte, ?large-limbed and golden as a pagan goddess,? forms a rewarding nonsexual; friendship with a young Indian man, Shoki.? He has written a screenplay, but is really valued for his beauty and manners.? When Brigitte?s sister Frances comes to L.A. to persuade her to move to New York, the charming Shoki changes her attitude and spirit. But in the end it is the beautiful people who matter.

Perhaps the most perfectly-crafted story in the collection is ?At the End of the Century.?? Celia, a psychotherapist, becomes obsessed with the pregnancy of her younger half-sister Lily.? Lily, a guileless young woman who cannot take care of herself, wanders around New York with a blank sketchbook and eventually marries a poet, who does not live with her; she continues to live with Celia.? We soon become aware that Celia?s fears about Lily?s pregnancy are real, but events unfold astonishingly in this unconventional love story.

The title story, ?A Lovesong for India,? is my least favorite.? So often this happens in collections of stories:? the title story seems weak and I cannot fathom why they chose it.? In this rather slow story, TC and his English wife, Diana, live in India, and are very comfortable so long as he is in the provinces.? As he rises in the Civil Service, he is eventually transferred to New Delhi, where he works in a position he dislikes.? their son, a teenage delinquent, grows up to be an unscrupulous businessman.? And in the end it is the son?s crimes that, paradoxically, bring?honor to TC and happiness to this couple.

This is a stunning book.? Jhabvala should win the National Book Award.? Isn?t it about time she won?? But I always think this about my favorite authors.

Astronomers are watching the astronomical equivalent of an instant replay of a spectacular outburst from the unstable, behemoth double-star system Eta Carinae, which was initially seen on Earth nearly 170 years ago. Astrophysicists affiliated with UC Santa Barbara and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT) contributed to the study.

Dubbed the "Great Eruption," the outburst lasted from 1837 to 1858 and temporarily made Eta Carinae the second brightest star in the sky. But luckily for today's astronomers, some of the light from the eruption took an indirect path to Earth and is just arriving now. The wayward light was heading in a different direction, away from our planet, when it bounced off dust lingering far from the turbulent stars and was rerouted to Earth, an effect called a "light echo." Because of its longer path, the light reached Earth 170 years later than the light that arrived directly.

The team's paper will appear Feb. 16, in a letter to the journal Nature. Armin Rest of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., initially discovered the light echoes, and was the leader of the study.

Federica Bianco, a postdoctoral researcher at UCSB and LCOGT, used LCOGT's Faulkes Telescope South in Siding Spring, Australia, to record the explosion after this time delay and compare it to eyewitness reports of the brightness of the star from the 1800's to determine that the light echo was indeed from the "Great Eruption."

"You are at the stadium, watching the game, and your team scores," said Bianco. "But you are too far away to get the details of the action, or in the case of Eta Carinae's great eruption, you do not have modern instruments, detectors, and spectrographs to study it. Now we are getting a replay ?? an up-close, detailed view of our cosmic eruption. And just like with the replay, we get to see the outburst from a different point of view, as the light that we see now was originally traveling in a different direction than the light seen in the 1840's."

Andy Howell, a staff scientist at LCOGT and adjunct faculty member at UCSB, adds, "We finally got to watch firsthand the event that created the iconic Hubble Space Telescope images of giant lobes of gas expanding away from Eta Carinae. It turns out it was an explosion ?? and a strange, cool one. It just blows my mind that we can go back in time and watch one of astronomy's greatest hits, and greatest mysteries, with a cosmic instant replay."

The observations are providing new insight into the behavior of powerful massive stars on the brink of detonation. Very massive stars, especially a pair of them, are exceedingly rare, and little is known about how they lose mass as they die. The views of the nearby erupting star revealed some unexpected results, which will force astronomers to modify physical models of the outburst.

Located 8,000 light-years from Earth, Eta Carinae is one of the largest and brightest star systems in our Milky Way galaxy. Although the chaotic duo is known for its petulant outbursts, the Great Eruption was the biggest ever observed. During the 20-year episode, Eta Carinae shed some 20 solar masses. Some of the outflow formed the system's twin giant lobes. Before the epic event, the stellar pair was 140 times heftier than our Sun.

The team's study involved a mix of visible-light and spectroscopic observations from ground-based telescopes. These observations mark the first time astronomers have used spectroscopy to analyze a light echo from a star undergoing powerful recurring eruptions, though they have measured this unique phenomenon around exploding stars called supernovae. Spectroscopy captures a star's "fingerprints," providing details about its behavior, including the temperature and speed of the ejected material.

The replay is giving astronomers a unique look at the outburst, and turning up some surprises. The turbulent star does not behave like other stars of its class. Eta Carinae is a member of a stellar class called Luminous Blue Variables ?? large, extremely bright stars that are prone to periodic outbursts.

The temperature of the outflow from Eta Carinae's central region, for example, is about 8,500 degrees Fahrenheit (5,000 Kelvin), which is much cooler than that of other erupting stars. "This star really seems to be an oddball," Rest said. "Now we have to go back to the models and see what has to change to actually produce what we are measuring."

The team first spotted the light echo while comparing visible-light observations they took of the star in 2010 and 2011 with the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory's Blanco 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile. They obtained another set of CTIO observations taken in 2003 by astronomer Nathan Smith of the University of Arizona in Tucson, which helped them piece together the whole 20-year outburst.

The research group will continue monitoring Eta Carinae because light from the outburst is still streaming to Earth. "We should see brightening again in six months from another increase in light that was seen in 1844," Rest said. "We hope to capture light from the outburst coming from different directions so that we can get a complete picture of the eruption."

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Flight attendants and ground workers marched in picket lines Tuesday to protest American Airlines' plans to outsource jobs and cut pay and benefits under a bankruptcy reorganization.

Several of the protesters acknowledged having little hope of changing the company's course. Some said that they expect to be laid off soon.

There appeared to be 200 to 250 protesters at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. A few passengers disembarked from cars and rolled their bags into the international terminal while avoiding contact with the pickets.

The event was a reminder of the long and bitter divide between labor and management at American, the third-largest airline in America. There may also be differences ? at least in style ? among the workers themselves. The pilots' union skipped the protest, preferring to take a less confrontational approach.

American and its parent, AMR Corp., filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 29 after running up billions of dollars in losses over the past decade. Two weeks ago, AMR laid out a plan to cut 13,000 jobs, kill its pension plans, reduce benefits and make other changes such as longer hours for some of its 88,000 employees.

Under bankruptcy law, the company can try to negotiate new labor contracts with unions. If that fails, it can ask the bankruptcy judge to impose the company's plan.

"I don't think this is going to do anything to change management's opinion as far as our (contract negotiations), but it's something we can do to show support for each other," said Angelica Abrams, a Dallas-based flight attendant with 30 years at American.

Laura Glading, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, also predicted that the company is determined to walk away from previous labor contracts. "We're here today to show we're not going to back down without a fight," she said.

American said the event didn't disrupt passengers at DFW, one of its five major U.S. hub airports.

Company spokesman Bruce Hicks said that restructuring American "is a difficult but necessary process." He said every employee group, including management, would be affected.

"Our goal is to exit as a growing, profitable company that preserves tens of thousands of jobs," Hicks said.

Natural resources such as oil and gas have thin future. Nobody now needs the experts to say that the natural resources are on the verge of extinction resulting in sky-rocketing prices on oil and gas.

Till an alternative to the natural resources is discovered, the leading countries of the world are now proceeding with the search of new sources of natural resources that will help lower the oil prices. Obama administration opened Arctic waters for new oil and gas development plans but kept Pacific and Atlantic coasts, the two areas that Bush administration wanted to include in the drilling areas, out of drillings. President Barack Obama canceled the plan suggested by Bush administration but later moved to drilling off the mid and southern Atlantic Coast, in the eastern gulf.

The interior department's offshore leasing plan attempts to steer a middle course but also suggests three lease sales of environmentally fragile, most contested frontier of energy production. The interior department states that this five year plan will yield more than three-quarters of oil and gas resources. The interior secretary added that the development should go ahead very cautiously, safely and should be based on the best scientific grounds.

According to environmental groups drilling in Arctic waters is not advisable but House Republicans do not affirm the statement. Environmentalists state that the oil spills in the remote north can not be cleared as there is no proven process to do the same. The experts also added that drilling in such remote areas is risky as the teams are not equipped to work in the typical Arctic weather conditions such as ice floes, towering waves and winter darkness.

Among the leases, most are to be offered in the Gulf of Mexico, a country that supplies more than a quarter of the nation's domestic oil. The Beaufort and Chukchi seas leases off Alaska' north coast are not scheduled for several years. This will buy some time for further scientific study, the experts say. The interior department stated that the leases would be adjusted in a way to keep safe the sensitive environmental resources, areas vital to native Alaskans and the environment though drilling is not new to Arctic waters. The Chukchi Seas and Beaufort have a handful of exploratory wells.

Among the companies that have the permission to explore and drill the areas of natural resources, Shell Exploration is awaiting the final permission to begin drilling on an existing lease, an ambitious project to tap reserves in the Arctic's chilly, turbulent waters.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A reality television producer charged with killing his wife while on vacation in Mexico has been extradited from the U.S. to await trial, the next step in a legal saga that has played out on both sides of the border.

The U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement they turned former "Survivor" producer Bruce Beresford-Redman over to Mexican authorities, who are transporting him to Cancun. The transfer took place roughly two weeks after State Department officials signed a warrant clearing his extradition.

The producer has been charged in Mexico in the death of his wife, Monica Beresford-Redman, whose body was found in a sewer cistern at a swank resort following an April 2010 family vacation. The couple had gone to the resort with their young children in an attempt to save their marriage after Monica Beresford-Redman learned her husband was cheating on her.

Bruce Beresford-Redman opted in December not to appeal a U.S. court ruling upholding his extradition. Mexican authorities later said they had reached an agreement for his return.

"Bruce eagerly wants to set the record straight, confront the charges in a fair trial and return to his children," spokesman Stephen Jaffe wrote in an email.

Beresford-Redman, an Emmy-nominated producer, has denied that he killed his wife and his attorneys have attacked evidence in the case. His U.S. attorneys fought his return to Mexico, but two federal judges ruled there was ample reason to send him abroad for trial.

Beresford-Redman has also employed attorneys in Mexico to challenge the validity of the case there.

Beresford-Redman was arrested on a fugitive warrant in the Los Angeles area in November 2010. Mexican and U.S. authorities say he left Mexico without permission, although Beresford-Redman's lawyers have claimed he was under no obligation to stay and needed to return to the U.S. to help care for his children.

The family of Monica Beresford-Redman said the extradition "marks a major milestone in our journey to ensure justice for Monica."

"After nearly 15 months in United States custody, Bruce will finally be returned to Mexico to stand trial for Monica's murder," attorney Alison Triessl wrote in a statement released on behalf of the family.

Triessl said the family will follow the case in Mexico and will ask for the maximum sentence if Beresford-Redman is convicted. The maximum sentence could be 12 to 30 years in prison.

"He has always stated that he is innocent of the charges against him and it is his hope that the court in Cancun will assure that he receives a fair trial in which, he is confident, he will be exonerated," Beresford-Redman's attorney, Richard Hirsch wrote in a statement.

U.S. prosecutors presented statements from hotel guests who said they heard loud arguing and cries of distress coming from the couple's room on the night Monica Beresford-Redman went missing.

The producer's attorneys have claimed the noises came from Beresford-Redman and his children playing loud games throughout the night and that there isn't any forensic evidence that he killed his wife.
