The art of molecular carpet-weaving

Thursday, December 29, 2011

Even the costliest oriental carpets have small mistakes. It is said that pious carpet-weavers deliberately include tiny mistakes in their fine carpets, because only God has the right to be immaculate. Molecular carpets, as the nanotechnology industry would like to have them are as yet in no danger of offending the gods. A team of physicists headed by Dr. Markus Lackinger from the Technische Universit?t M?nchen (TUM) und Professor Thomas Bein from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit?t M?nchen (LMU) has now developed a process by which they can build up high-quality polymer networks using boron acid components.

The "carpets" that the physicists are working on in their laboratory in the Deutsches Museum M?nchen consist of ordered two-dimensional structures created by self-organized boron acid molecules on a graphite surface. By eliminating water, the molecules bond together in a one-atom thick network held together solely by chemical bonds ? a fact that makes this network very stable. The regular honey-comb-like arrangement of the molecules results in a nano-structured surface whose pores can be used, for instance, as stable forms for the production of metal nano-particles.

The molecular carpets also come in nearly perfect models; however, these are not very stable, unfortunately. In these models the bonds between the molecules are very weak ? for instance hydrogen bridge bonds or van der Waals forces. The advantage of this variant is that faults in the regular structure are repaired during the self-organization process ? bad bonds are dissolved so that proper bonds can form.

However, many applications call for molecular networks that are mechanically, thermally and/or chemically stable. Linking the molecules by means of strong chemical bonds can create such durable molecule carpets. The down side is that the unavoidable weaving mistakes can no longer be corrected due to the great bonding strength.

Markus Lackinger and his colleagues have now found a way to create a molecular carpet with stable covalent bonds without significant weaving mistakes. The method is based on a bonding reaction that creates a molecular carpet out of individual boron acid molecules. It is a condensation reaction in which water molecules are released. If bonding takes place at temperatures of a little over 100?C with only a small amount of water present, mistakes can be corrected during weaving. The result is the sought after magic carpet: molecules in a stable and well-ordered one-layer structure.

Markus Lackinger's laboratory is located in the Deutsches Museum M?nchen. There he is doing research at the Chair of Prof. Wolfgang Heckl (TUM School of Education, TU M?nchen). Prof. Bein holds a Chair at the Department of Chemistry at the LMU. The research was conducted in collaboration with Prof. Paul Knochel's work group (LMU) and Physical Electronics GmbH, with funding by the Excellence Cluster Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) and the Bavarian Research Foundation (BFS).

Exposition

Ahh. This is a great question. xD

The trouble a lot of introductions run into is they start with such a wide scope, talking about the universe in the broadest of strokes, that there's no way for potential players to hook themselves in. I know you said not to mention Star Wars, but seriously look at how the movies themselves did it. You start with the screen crawl "LONG LONG AGO IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY" which, y'know, is about as broad as you can get but very quickly you're drawn into the story because the characters are instantly relatable, and you're not lost still in gobs of explanatory things.

I hope that makes sense. One of the greatest ways to get exposition out is to involve the reader. I remember a sci-fi RP once on another board where the GM spoke to potential readers as though they were late to a classroom session where their potential mission was being outlined. Having a fantasy opening being told as a "sonnet" by a minstrel by a fire.

Implying exposition through dialogue, or having brief narrative moments explain things is also an option. Showing the reader a shrine to a deity and how it has cracked and been overgrown with time speaks volumes of a country leaving its roots behind more than just telling us about it.

As I say, character is compass. Making the exposition so that the reader feels like they're a part of the story right away rather than waiting for the broad-as-the-sky opener down to finally, finally, why they decided to read through all the pages is the way to go.

I once read a hunk of "this is our world!" extra-IC nonsense that got as detailed as to tell potential players how people blow their nose in the country. That's not okay.

As unorganized as I am, I sure hope you got something outta that.

Jobs focus has kept Ontario's green energy plan alive

Date: Wednesday Dec. 28, 2011 7:29 AM ET

TORONTO ? The Ontario government has been able to stick by its green energy plans amid a looming recession by making the project about jobs, but its biggest challenge may be one of public relations, not finance.

The focus on green energy has come at a political cost, with the Liberals losing their majority mandate after this fall's election. That result ushered in a precarious new term that some worry could lead to an overhaul of the green plans if the Liberal government falls.

Experts don't believe in a doomsday scenario for green energy in Ontario, because despite the ongoing controversy, the Green Energy Act has been tied to jobs -- and it's the only solution that has been put forward to deal with pressures in the electricity system.

But that doesn't mean the government isn't going to have an uphill battle trying to implement the changes.

"It's a very difficult issue, the biggest problem is public opinion, getting the public to accept the fact that essentially our energy supplies are going to have to change," said Henry Jacek, a politics expert at McMaster University in Hamilton.

"People want the energy but they don't want to look at the infrastructure that creates that energy."

There has been ongoing opposition from many rural areas where residents worry about the health effects of having wind turbines placed near their homes, and complain about a lack of local consultation.

"Rural Ontario hasn't had strong local democracy since the Green Energy Act was passed," said John Laforet, former president of Wind Concerns Ontario, and the man who spearheaded the revolt against the Liberals in those parts.

"What caused the political backlash was three years of the government just refusing to listen. It was citizens who had tried everything else to express their concerns and frustrations and watching it fall on deaf ears in Toronto, rise up and stand up for themselves and defeat those MPPs who weren't prepared to do the job."

The Liberals lost some high-profile politicians in that fight, including former Education Minister Leona Dombrowsky and Environment Minister John Wilkinson.

"It's quite clear where rural municipalities stand on this issue," Laforet said.

"If the industry wants to have a future in Ontario -- and if the Liberals want to have a future governing Ontario -- I think it's going to be important for everyone involved, to talk to citizens who are opposing these projects to find out what and what can be done."

Environmentalists have praised some aspects of the act but continue to express concern over the province's commitment to nuclear power, which makes up 50 per cent of its energy source, as well as a lack of focus on conservation efforts.

"The GEA has been an amazing success since it was passed in 2009, but the GEA will effectively expire in 2018 if the government doesn't permit green and clean sources to displace at least some nuclear supply," said Shawn-Patrick Stensil, a nuclear analyst with Greenpeace Canada.

"Otherwise put, if the Liberals don't reduce their commitment to nuclear, the GEA may suffer the same fate under the Liberals as under the Tories."

The harshest criticism for the plan, however, has revolved around costs.

Ontario's auditor general added his voice to the chorus of critics recently by casting doubt on the Liberals' job-creation figures and suggesting that 30,000 of the promised 50,000 jobs that were to be created under the Green Energy Act would likely to be short-term construction gigs.

What's more, he argued, studies in other jurisdictions have shown that for every job created through renewable energy, two to four jobs are often lost in other sectors due to higher electricity prices.

Auditor Jim McCarter also exposed how independent decision-making over renewable energy projects has effectively been quashed by concentrating power in the energy minister's office, and found that the government fast-tracked billions of dollars of wind and solar energy projects with little oversight -- a move that will add about $220 million a year to the cost of electricity in Ontario.

"The auditor general's report put the lid on the Green Energy Act," said Progressive Conservative critic Vic Fedeli.

"How can you continue to hold out any hope at all for any of the policies in there?"

The Tories support hydroelectric, gas and nuclear energy, and would opt to scrap the act if elected.

The New Democrats support parts of the act, but would like to see some aspects, like its feed-in-tariff program, applied to smaller projects, as well as a renewed focus on efficiency and conservation.

Energy Minister Chris Bentley has said he will take a look at the auditor's recommendations, but insisted the focus on green energy was the right move, even if the province ends up finding itself in the midst of another recession.

"We started this in the depths of a world economic recession when we were fighting for jobs, fighting to create opportunities," said Bentley.

"It's been very successful so far, 20,000-plus jobs, billions of dollars worth of investments either here or committed. We're involved in a review right now that will help us address the price issue, improve the approach, and we're going to continue to strengthen it."

That perseverance may give hope to other jurisdictions struggling to get the environment on the agenda when jobs are voters' main concern.

But just like Ontarians cared little about the success of green energy in places like Germany, Jacek said voters in other areas won't be swayed by Ontario's strategy.

"I don't think public opinion is looking at what's going on in other places," Jacek said.

"It's a very local orientation -- it's what can I see and hear from my front porch."

Did Columbus' crew bring syphilis to Europe?

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue, but when he returned from 'cross the seas, did he bring with him a new disease?

New skeletal evidence suggests Columbus and his crew not only introduced the Old World to the New World, but brought back syphilis as well, researchers say.

Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria, and is usually curable nowadays with antibiotics. Untreated, it can damage the heart, brain, eyes and bones; it can also be fatal.

The first known epidemic of syphilis occurred during the Renaissance in 1495. Initially its plague broke out among the army of Charles the VIII after the French king invaded Naples. It then proceeded to devastate Europe, said researcher George Armelagos, a skeletal biologist at Emory University in Atlanta.

"Syphilis has been around for 500 years," said researcher Molly Zuckerman at Mississippi State University. "People started debating where it came from shortly afterward, and they haven't stopped since. It was one of the first global diseases, and understanding where it came from and how it spread may help us combat diseases today."

Stigmatized disease

The fact that syphilis is a stigmatized sexually transmitted disease has added to the controversy over its origins. People often seem to want to blame some other country for it, said researcher Kristin Harper, an evolutionary biologist at Emory. [ Top 10 Stigmatized Health Disorders ]

Armelagos originally doubted the so-called Columbian theory for syphilis when he first heard about it decades ago. "I laughed at the idea that a small group of sailors brought back this disease that caused this major European epidemic," he recalled. Critics of the Columbian theory have proposed that syphilis had always bedeviled the Old World but simply had not been set apart from other rotting diseases such as leprosy until 1500 or so.

However, upon further investigation, Armelagos and his colleagues got a shock ? all of the available evidence they found supported the Columbian theory, findings they published in 1988. "It was a paradigm shift," Armelagos says. Then in 2008, genetic analysis by Armelagos and his collaborators of syphilis's family of bacteria lent further support to the theory.

Still, there have been reports of 50 skeletons from Europe dating back from before Columbus set sail that apparently showed the lesions of chronic syphilis. These seemed to be evidence that syphilis originated in the Old World and that Columbus was not to blame.

Armelagos and his colleagues took a closer look at all the data from these prior reports. They found most of the skeletal material didn't actually meet at least one of the standard diagnostic criteria for chronic syphilis, such as pitting on the skull, known as caries sicca, and pitting and swelling of the long bones.

"There's no really good evidence of a syphilis case before 1492 in Europe," Armelagos told LiveScience.

In the seafood?

The 16 reports that did meet the criteria for syphilis came from coastal regions where seafood was a large part of the diet. This seafood contains "old carbon" from deep, upwelling ocean waters. As such, they might fall prey to the so-called "marine reservoir effect" that can throw off radiocarbon dating of a skeleton by hundreds or even thousands of years. To adjust for this effect, the researchers figured out the amount of seafood these individuals ate when alive. Since our bodies constantly break down and rebuild our bones, measurements of bone-collagen protein can provide a record of diet.

"Once we adjusted for the marine signature, all of the skeletons that showed definite signs of treponemal disease appeared to be dated to after Columbus returned to Europe," Harper said, findings detailed in the current Yearbook of Physical Anthropology.

"What it really shows to me is that globalization of disease is not a modern condition," Armelagos said. "In 1492, you had the transmission of a number of diseases from Europe that decimated Native Americans, and you also had disease from Native Americans to Europe."

"The lesson we can learn for today from history is that these epidemics are the result of unrest," Armelagos added. "With syphilis, wars were going on in Europe at the time, and all the turmoil set the stage for the disease. Nowadays, a lot of diseases jump the species barrier due to environmental unrest."

"The origin of syphilis is a fascinating, compelling question," Zuckerman said. "The current evidence is pretty definitive, but we shouldn't close the book and say we're done with the subject. The great thing about science is constantly being able to understand things in a new light."

Iran rejects U.S. allegation on al Qaeda operative (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran rejected as "completely baseless" U.S. allegations that it was harboring an al Qaeda member who is accused of operating as a facilitator and financier for the group from the Islamic Republic, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Sunday.

The United States announced Thursday that it was establishing a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to Syrian-born Yasin al-Suri, who is also known as Ezedin Abdel Aziz Khalil.

"The American government's recent unwise scenario regarding Iran's involvement in the September 11, 2001 attacks and the presence of an al Qaeda member in Iran is completely baseless," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Sunday, according to Fars.

Al-Suri has been accused of helping move money and recruits through Iran to al Qaeda leaders in neighboring countries under an agreement between the group and the Iranian government, Senior State Department official Robert Hartung has said.

The $10 million bounty was the first offered for an al Qaeda financier and is aimed at disrupting a financial network that has operated from within Iran's borders since 2005, the Treasury Department said.

Friday a federal district court in Manhattan ruled that Iran and Hezbollah materially and directly supported al Qaeda in the September 11, 2001 attacks and are legally responsible for damages to hundreds of family members of 9/11 victims who are plaintiffs in the case.

"The world should consider the consequences of such irresponsible behavior by American officials ... It is also necessary that the international community shows its deep concerns to the American government," Mehmanparast said.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called the September 11 attacks on the United States a "big fabrication" by Washington that was used to justify the U.S. war on terrorism.

The United States and its Western allies have been locked in a standoff with Iran over its disputed nuclear program, which Washington believes is aimed at producing nuclear weapons but which Tehran says is solely for peaceful purposes.

Pope urges end to Syria bloodshed, peace worldwide (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI called for an end to the bloodshed in Syria and the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in his Christmas message Sunday, an appeal for peace that was challenged by deadly attacks on Nigerian churches.

Benedict delivered his "Urbi et Orbi" speech (Latin for "to the city and to the world") from the central loggia of St. Peter's Basilica overlooking a sun-drenched piazza below, before thousands of jubilant tourists and pilgrims, and hundreds of colorful Swiss Guards and Italian military bands.

The 84-year-old pope, fresh off a late-night Christmas Eve Mass, said he prayed that the birth of Jesus, which Christmas celebrates, would send a message to all who need to be saved from hardships.

He cited refugees from the Horn of Africa and flood victims in Thailand, among others, and called for greater political dialogue in Myanmar, and stability in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa's Great Lakes region.

He said he prayed that God would help the Israelis and the Palestinians resume talks.

"May he bring an end to the violence in Syria, where so much blood has already been shed," he said.

The pope didn't mention the deadly blasts on churches in Nigeria, but the Vatican issued a statement denouncing the attacks as a sign of "cruelty and absurd, blind hatred" that shows no respect for human life.

Early Sunday, an explosion ripped through a Catholic church during Christmas Mass near Nigeria's capital of Abuja, and an emergency worker reported that 25 people were killed. A second explosion struck near a church in Nigeria's restive central city of Jos, while two other explosions hit the northeast state of Yobe.

There was no immediately claim of responsibility for either explosion, but Nigeria has suffered a wave of sectarian attacks blamed on the radical Muslim sect Boko Haram.

Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said the Catholic church was praying for all Nigerians confronting "this terrorist violence in these days that should be filled with peace and joy."

The Vatican press office noted that Benedict's speech was prepared well in advance of the attacks.

After his speech, Benedict delivered Christmas greetings in 65 different languages, from Mongolian to Maori, Aramaic to Albanian, Tamil to Thai. He finished the list with Guarani and Latin, as the bells tolled from St. Peter's enormous bell towers.

In the West Bank, hundreds of Christian faithful, defying lashing rains and wind, celebrated Christmas Mass at Jesus' traditional birthplace of Bethleham on Sunday, spirits high despite the gloomy weather.

Worshippers dressed in their holiday best rushed under cover of umbrellas into St. Catherine's Church on Manger Square, leaving the plaza, with its 50-foot-tall (15-meter-tall) Christmas tree, deserted. The church was packed, and the overflow crowd waited eagerly in an arched corridor for a chance to enter.

Inside, supplicants, some dressed in the traditional attire of foreign lands, raised their voices in prayer, kissed a plaster statue of a baby Jesus and took communion. St. Catherine's is attached to the smaller Church of the Nativity, which is built over a grotto where devout Christians believe Jesus was born.

"Lots of pilgrims from around the world are coming to be here on Christmas," said Don Moore, 41, a psychology professor from Berkeley, Calif., who came to Bethlehem with his family. "We wanted to be part of the action. This is the place, this is where it all started."

With turnout at its highest in more than a decade, proud Palestinian officials said they were praying the celebrations would bring them closer to their dream of independence.

In Britain, the leader of the world's Anglicans, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said the summer riots in Britain and the financial crisis have broken bonds and abused trust in British society.

In his Christmas Day sermon, Rowan Williams appealed to those congregated at Canterbury Cathedral to learn lessons about "mutual obligation" from the events of the past year. He said Sunday "the most pressing question" now facing Britain is "who and where we are as a society."

"Bonds have been broken, trust abused and lost," he said.

Google in Shambles over Android Patents War

The company is accused of denying Java licensing royalties to Oracle, for having copied their code in the design and development of the Android operating system. It is believed the decision to deny a patent claim was the decision of Andy Rubin, the current Head of Google's Mobile Divison, according to a report by allthingsd.com. In addition, Google's Chief Legal Officer, David Drummond, dismissed the patent system as "bogus" and called for its restructuring, when talking about the ongoing patents war.

Like us on Facebook

The maker of the Android software has a portfolio of about 10,000 mobile patents but finds itself under attack from rivals Microsoft, as well as Apple. The former's involvement in the patent wars dates back to when it prevailed over Motorola for a patent on scheduling meetings over mobile phones.

Apple Inc. has its own grudge against Google - probably since the time the former Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer labeled Android a "stolen product". The Cupertino-based company has several patent infringement complaints, including one relating to an option that allows users to switch apps between calls.

Meanwhile, mobile makers HTC face a court-imposed import ban for software patent violations with Apple.

Southern China protest stretches to 4th day

By Hannah Belcher, CNN

Police block villagers at the scene of environmental protests in the town of Haimen, Guangdong Province, on December 22, 2011.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Police detain news crew, cable network says
  • Tear gas is used again on a large crowd of people
  • Witnesses say some protesters have been beaten this week
  • The protesters are concerned about pollution from a coal power plant

Beijing (CNN) -- Police fired tear gas Friday at demonstrators gathered for a fourth straight day of protests over a coal power plant in the southern Chinese town of Haimen and for the release of villagers detained during earlier scuffles with authorities.

Video from CNN affiliate i-CABLE News showed a large group of protestors running from clouds of tear gas on a main street. The Hong Kong-based cable network later reported that its reporting team was being detained by police.

Thousands of protestors gathered at the entrance of a local expressway, according to Mr. Zheng, a local resident who declined to give his full name for fear of being identified by authorities. Police blocked the expressway entrance several days ago and maintain a heavy presence there.

The protests began Tuesday morning when a group of residents went to the local government with a petition asking for the removal of the power plant and to stop the construction of a second.

When they did not get a response, they gathered on a street outside the government building. Some people were beaten.

Protests have been on the rise in China, where public displays of dissatisfaction are typically rare. The protests are driven by socioeconomic issues like income inequality, corruption, pollution and inflation, according to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

Nationals bolster rotation with Gonzalez (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Washington Nationals have acquired All-Star left-handed pitcher Gio Gonzalez in a six-player trade with the Oakland A's, the teams said on Friday.

Gonzalez, 26, earned his first All-Star selection this year after finishing among the American League leaders in wins, strikeouts (197), and ERA (3.12) with a 16-12 record in 32 starts.

"We could not be more pleased to add lefthander Gio Gonzalez to our club," Nationals executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo said in a statement.

"Gio is a front-line starter with glowing credentials, the vast majority of which were achieved before his 26th birthday.

"Gio's presence bolsters the top portion of our rotation with yet another power arm to compete in the rugged National League East."

Gonzalez has a career record 38-32 in 95 games and a 3.93 ERA.

The Nationals also acquired minor league right handed pitcher Robert Gilliam, while the A's received right-handed pitchers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock, left-handed pitcher Tom Milone and catcher Derek Norris.

Still missing, former UFC fighter Junie Browning is big news in Thailand

Still missing, former UFC fighter Junie Browning is big news in Thailand

Junie Brownie has been out of the UFC's hair for a while, but he's been back in the news over the last week. Apparently, it's a big deal in Thailand.

The former reality star on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter" got into a big brouhaha at a bar in Phuket on Dec. 13. He fled the hospital where he was being treated for injuries, been missing ever since and the Thai papers are all over the story.

Police have mounted a Phuket-wide hunt for an American man who started one brawl in a Phuket bar then continued it in the emergency treatment ward at Patong Hospital. Police have named the suspect they wish to interview as Allen Browning, 26, a Thai boxer who fled into the night on Sunday in Patong and has not been seen since.

Earlier in the night, Mr Browning allegedly was seen beating up on an expat woman in a bar in Patak Road, Karon. He also lashed out at Thai female bar staff when they tried to intervene, police said.

Four other tourists from Australia and the US also attempted to intervene but Mr Browning lashed out at them, too, police said.

One of those tourist was Simon Menzies. Browning claims it was Menzies, who was the real troublemaker. Fightlinker discovered that Menzies was also in trouble with the law earlier this year during a flight from Sydney to Darwin.

Sydney man Simon Wilson Menzies, 31, was drunk and angry when he told the female cabin crew manager on a flight this week that he could "bring the plane down if he wanted."

Menzies said: "I'm half muslim, half Aboriginal and everyone else is a white a*******. I could f******blow up the plane."

[...] The court heard Menzies was on Jetstar flight JQ81 from Brisbane to Darwin on Tuesday com when he became abusive after being refused a fourth beer. The court heard he was refused service because he continued to be rowdy despite repeated warnings.

After he was refused service Menzies, who is 190cm and solidly built, stood over the cabin crew manager and told her to get the captain. "Send the captain I will f****** smash him I'm the biggest guy on the plane," he said.

None of this comes as much of a shock with Browning. He was nearly kicked off TUF 8 several times for violent outbursts. He survived and was even given two more fights with the promotion.

In 2009, Browning was taken to a Las Vegas area hospital after what was reported to be a failed suicide attempt. He compounded his issue by allegedly attacking a female nurse at the hospital. The UFC immediately released him from his contract. He's gone 1-4 since his stint with the promotion and last fought in August. Frankly, right now fighting is the least of his problems.

Keen On? Walter Isaacson: Was Steve Jobs a Tyrant? (TCTV)

Steve-Jobs-BioCover-640x480_620x433At the heart of the enigma of Steve Jobs lies a riddle about authority. On the one hand, Jobs was an intrinsically anti-authoritarian figure whose like was a litany of rebellions against every kind of convention. On the other hand, however, Jobs often seemed to run Apple like a personal fiefdom, shaping products and strategy according to his own whims and instincts.

Brock Lesnar charged with hunting violations in Canada

Brock Lesnar charged with hunting violations in Canada

Brock Lesnar is a huge fan of hunting, but his favorite pastime got him in a spot of trouble in Canada. Lesnar faces charges in Medicine Hat, Alberta for doing the kind of things that tick off hunting officials. From our friends at CJCY in Alberta:

The charges came before Medicine Hat Provincial Court Thursday morning and include improper affixation of tags, spoilage of skin and edible flesh and possession of a controlled animal.

My lack of hunting knowledge makes this sound pretty bad, because spoilage of skin and edible flesh sound like plot devices from "Silence of the Lambs." However, the good people of Canada must not be too angry with Lesnar, because his court date was continued until January, after his fight with Alistair Overeem.

Homeland Security cuts ties with Arizona sheriff (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Department of Homeland Security is cutting ties with an Arizona sheriff accused of a wide range of civil right violations.

Secretary Janet Napolitano said Thursday the department is ending an agreement with the Maricopa County sheriff's office that allowed trained deputies to enforce immigration laws. It's also restricting the office's use of the Secure Communities program, which uses fingerprints collected in local jails to identify illegal immigrants.

Napolitano's announcement came shortly after the Justice Department released a scathing report accusing Sheriff Joe Arpaio (ar-PEYE'-oh) and his office of committing a wide range of civil rights violations against Latinos. Justice Department investigators said the abuses included a pattern of racial profiling.

Survey: 1 in 4 women attacked by intimate partner

Chart shows violence against women by intimate partners

Chart shows violence against women by intimate partners

(AP) ? It's a startling number: 1 in 4 women surveyed by the government say they were violently attacked by their husbands or boyfriends.

Experts in domestic violence don't find it too surprising, although some aspects of the survey may have led to higher numbers than are sometimes reported.

Even so, a government official who oversaw the research called the results "astounding."

"It's the first time we've had this kind of estimate" on the prevalence of intimate partner violence, said Linda Degutis of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The survey, released by the CDC Wednesday, marks the beginning of a new annual project to look at how many women say they've been abused.

One expert called the new report's estimate on rape and attempted rape "extremely high" ? with 1 in 5 women saying they were victims. About half of those cases involved intimate partners. No documentation was sought to verify the women's claims, which were made anonymously.

But advocates say the new rape numbers are plausible.

"It's a major problem that often is underestimated and overlooked," said Linda James, director of health for Futures Without Violence, a San Francisco-based organization that advocates against domestic abuse.

The CDC report is based on a randomized telephone survey of about 9,000 women and 7,400 men.

Among the findings:

? As many as 29 million women say they have suffered severe and frightening physical violence from a boyfriend, spouse or other intimate partner. That includes being choked, beaten, stabbed, shot, punched, slammed against something or hurt by hair-pulling.

? That number grows to 36 million if slapping, pushing and shoving are counted.

? Almost half of the women who reported rape or attempted rape said it happened when they were 17 or younger.

?As many as 1 in 3 women have experienced rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetimes, compared to about 1 in 10 men.

?Both men and women who had been menaced or attacked in these ways reported more health problems. Female victims, in particular, had significantly higher rates of irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, frequent headaches and difficulty sleeping.

?Certain states seemed to have higher reports of sexual violence than others. Alaska, Oregon and Nevada were among the highest in rapes and attempted rapes of women, and Virginia and Tennessee were among the lowest.

Several of the CDC numbers are higher than those of other sources. For example, the CDC study suggests that 1.3 million women have suffered rape, attempted rape or had sex forced on them in the previous year. That statistic is more than seven times greater than what was reported by a Department of Justice household survey conducted last year.

The CDC rape numbers seem "extremely high," but there may be several reasons for the differences, including how the surveys were done, who chose to participate and how "rape" and other types of assault were defined or interpreted, said Shannan Catalano, a statistician with the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

"It is an evolving field, and everyone is striving to get a handle on what's the best estimate," Catalano said.

The CDC's numbers don't seem surprising to people who work with abused women.

"I think that the awareness is growing," said Kim Frndak, community educator for the Women's Rescue Center to End Domestic Violence, which operates a shelter on the outskirts of Atlanta.

"More and more people are really saying, 'Oh, this is something that we need to pay attention to as well,' because it's your sister, it's your mother, it's your daughter, it's your son, it's your brother. Someone in your own circle is being affected by domestic violence, and the effects can be devastating," she said.
